Case study

Project Overview

JONATHAN YEO + THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS

Working as Jonathan Yeo's lead in-house creative technology director to help develop the world's first bronze sculpture created in VR for the Royal Academy of Arts 2018 'From Life' exhibition. Collaborating with Los Angeles based creative tech company Otoy we were able to capture a highly detailed 3D scan of Jonathan via their LightStage scanner, which was then imported into Google's Tilt Brush software. In a ‘virtual life room’ the artist was able to create a self-portrait based on the digital scan which was then printed directly from Tilt Brush With the help of Google’s VR lab in San Francisco. The 3D print was then sent back to the UK where it was cast in bronze by Pangolin Editions, one of the world’s leading fine art sculpture foundries. The final piece was displayed at the 'From Life' show which examined how artists develop new ways of visualising and creating artwork from life with evolving technology.
Taking over both the Sackler Wing and Tennant Galleries, the show also featured work by Antony Gormley, Jenny Saville, Lucian Freud, Jeremy Deller, Yinka Shonibare, Gillian Wearing, Farshid Moussavi and Cai Guo-Qiang.
